Artist: Laurel Johannesson ~ [20th century] Canadian
Artist: Laurel Johannesson ~ [20th century] Canadian
Reference: included in the University of Calgary Millenium Portfolio, 1999 as alumna; represented by Image 54 Art Gallery, Calgary
Laurel Johannesson studied at the University of Calgary, the University of Saskatchewan, and the Royal College of Art in London. She has twice been a visiting artist and scholar at the American Academy in Rome and has participated in artist residencies in Iceland, Greece, and the South of France. A fellow of the Bau Institute (Italy), she has had the rare opportunity to conduct research at the Vatican Library and was an invited resident at Palazzo Monti in Brescia, Italy.
Working across photography, experimental film, painting, digital collage, and moving images, Laurel creates evocative works that explore the perception of time and space. Often set in site-specific, water-based environments, her images reveal uncanny juxtapositions between body and nature, realism and dream. Her research also engages deeply with the beach as a liminal or temporal zone, and she has investigated the intersections between art and technology through generative and interactive processes.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in countries including Switzerland, Italy, Greece, England, France, India, Iceland, Portugal, Egypt, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, Russia, the United States, and Canada. Recent exhibitions include the Athens Digital Arts Festival | Techno(s)cene in Greece and Photo Basel in Switzerland.
Laurel’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Glenbow Museum, Palazzo Monti, Suncor Energy, Encana Corporation, Cenovus Energy, and the Royal College of Art. She has been featured in L’oeil de la Photographie / The Eye of Photography, Designboom, CLOT Magazine, Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, The Art Talk Magazine, Elle Canada, and others.
She is a Professor at the Alberta University of the Arts, where her research into temporality, the moving image, interactivity, and generative art has been presented at peer-reviewed conferences in Italy in Rome, Florence, Milan, and Ravenna, as well as London (University of Greenwich), and Los Angeles (UCLA). Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Polaroid, and the Alberta University of the Arts.

Artist: Bryce Krynski ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Artist: Bryce Krynski ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Reference: Krynski is an artist and filmmaker based in Mohkinstsis [Calgary, AB], whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography, moving image, sculpture, archival imagery, found objects, and olfactory art. His sensorial works trace overlooked stories embedded in colonial land practices, food systems, and discarded materials, drawing attention to the politics of erasure and the emotional power of scent and memory. Informed by his family’s Polish and Mennonite settler heritage, Krynski’s research-driven approach is rooted in narrative inquiry and material experimentation. Themes of humour, wayfinding, and healing recur in his work, which often invite participation and subtle shifts in perception. Krynski’s work has been exhibited at the Exposure Photography Festival, Surrey Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Alberta, with film screenings at Media City Film Festival and Images Festival. His art is held in public and private collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, BMO Centre, and Bow Valley College. He is represented by Christine Klassen Gallery.

Artist: Angela Lane ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Reference: Angela Lane is a visual artist based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She holds a BFA with Distinction from the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary, Alberta in 2007 and her MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in 2011. Angela was selected to participate in the 2021 London Art Biennial and in 2011, was recognized as MICA’s nominee for the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. In 2007, she was selected as the Alberta finalist in the BMO 1st Art Painting Competition in Canada. Angela’s work is collected on both private and corporate levels including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Bank of Montreal Corporate Collection.
Angela Lane creates fantastic, shaped paintings which fuse organic and geometric shapes, sculpture, illusion, physical form and layered imagery. This original choreography negotiates the concrete nature of constructed forms alongside the collaged illusions they encompass. By combining elements from quilting and textiles arts with sculpture and painting she is blurring the long defined barriers between craft and fine art."

Artist: Patricia Lortie ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Artist: Patricia Lortie ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Reference: Artist statement: The experience of the natural world reaches the core of my being. It opens up the connection to the mystic of being human and reminds me that I am part of an unexplainable and unbroken system.
Simple and profound earth bounding experiences shape my artistic endeavours. An afternoon laying on warm rocks while my father tries his hand at fly-fishing. The thick veil of cloud parting unexpectedly to reveal a glorious view of the surrounding summits. A quiet paddle on the surface of a mirror like lake. A slow float down the river chasing warm currents. All moments where existing in the world feel both simple and extraordinary.
In my artwork, I look for that feeling, chasing a profound connection with the world we live in. I attempt to revive the knowledge that we part of the natural system. Because I only feel completely satisfied when I embrace my minute yet profound place in the world.
My artwork, be it a painting, a sculpture, an installation or a community project, aims to restore awareness of our symbiotic relationship with nature. Each work provides an experience of feeling the unseen bounds that makes our existence possible; the unbreakable, undeniable bounds that we are all born into.
