Artist: Paul de Groot ~ [21st Century] Dutch/Canadian
Artist: Paul de Groot ~ [21st Century] Dutch/Canadian
Reference: Paul deGroot was born in the Netherlands but moved to Canada at an early age and is currently based in Calgary. Paul started art school at Kootenay College along with good friend, Chris Cran. Both Paul and Chris then moved to Calgary to finish their degrees at the Alberta College of Art, [now the Alberta University of the Arts], where Paul’s nickname became 'the forger'. Paul continued to work in his home studio but did not exhibit until recently. Last year Paul had his first solo show at the Herringer Kiss Gallery which was a critical and commercial success. He has had two works purchased by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and numerous to private collections. Paul’s current work is rooted in the photorealist genre, though not in the strictest sense. The paintings, executed in oil, are based on personal photographs, chosen intuitively, which are generally photoshopped or manipulated in some manner before translating them to canvas. The subject matter consists of everyday scenes, such as buildings, street scenes, vehicles, figures, etc., that are often perceived as ordinary or unremarkable in themselves. Although mostly painted monochromatically, colour always plays an important role in the paintings. The work is influenced by an interest in the ordinary, everyday world, and in trying to make some sense of it.

Artist: Megan Dyck ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Artist: Megan Dyck ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Reference: Calgary-based Megan Dyck’s figurative imagery investigates the ubiquity of photography and aesthetic qualities of glitch that occur in digital and analog communication as metaphors for psychological isolation, loneliness, and desire. Transcribing benign and dramatic inadvertent visual flaws observed in contemporary and historical lens-based images of people, her paintings and drawings collectively address instances of fragmentation, warping, distortion, and double-exposure as emblems for the incongruousness of the human psyche. Co-opting pixelated selfies, frozen excerpts of online meetings, found film negatives, and lagging video-clips encountered on social media as primary visual referents, Dyck’s work attempts to convey the unease of being a consumer of images in the digital age: moving perpetually between a sense of connection and alienation. Megan Dyck is an artist and educator living and working in Calgary, AB. She received her MFA from the University of Victoria, and holds a BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts. In addition to her studio practice, Megan teaches painting and colour theory at AUArts.

RE: WIGGLE ROOM
This abstract painting is part of a body of work that explored my own responses to the nature of working purely in an abstract manner. I have always been interested in abstraction as a form of expression as it has played out in my sculpture, drawing and painting. It’s the process and the investigation and the ridiculous creation of problems that I then must solve that keeps my energy focussed here. The title of this work creates a juxtaposition with the work that offers the viewer some sort of non narrative entry point.
