Reference
Janvier's paintings have had international exposure since the very beginning of his career, when he won a prize in an exhibition at the Vatican in Rome in 1950. Following upon international exposure of his greatly admired mural for the Indians of Canada Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, his works were shown during the 1970s in many solo and group exhibitions across Canada and in other countries such as Belgium, China, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and the USA.Part of his broader exploration of Dene culture and northern Alberta landscapes, this work reflects his signature style combining vivid colours with calligraphic lines. The 's'- curve, 'feathered stems', and floral elements are characteristic of traditional Dene iconography which Janvier brilliantly reinterprets here with modern abstraction. 'Before my time, there was no abstract, except utilitarian geometric design. Therefore, the works that have become known as Janvier’s works, are now classics.' Statement by Alex Janvier...

Reference
Slash-Pile [2007] by Erik Olson was first presented in the artist’s self-curated debut exhibition staged in an abandoned gas station. Painted following a motorcycle journey through the widespread Mountain Pine Beetle infestation across British Columbia and Alberta, the work reflects the vast ecological disruption that left forests of red, dead pine stretching to the horizon. Depicting a logging 'slash pile,' the composition fragments the Canadian landscape into a faceted, Cubist-inflected vision, evoking the legacy of Tom Thomson. The painting belongs to a series produced at the Banff Centre in summer 2007; its largest counterpart is held in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts
included in the Mountain Pine Beetle, IDEAL Art Space, Calgary, Canada, 2007; see the artist's website here for image and reference

"Upon his return to Vancouver in late 1945, Shadbolt turned completely away from the war experience ...and began a series of romantic images. [He] again returned to observing the streets and life of Vancouver and Victoria. This year-long interlude...is one of the high points of his career. Shadbolt displays a control of the medium [watercolour], a strength of composition and an ability to create a palpable atmosphere which few can equal. These moody, slightly melancholy images remain long in our memories." Ian Thom, curator of Jack Shadbolt: Early Watercolours 1980 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, pg 9.
