This gouache on paper board was created by Casson as a working study for the Sampson Matthews silkscreen White Pine. According to the book, Art for War and Peace: How a Great Art Project Helped Canada Discover Itself by Ian Sigvaldason and Scott Steedman [page 140], Casson completed a small watercolour sketch of White Pine in July of 1948 near Whitefish Falls, Ontario. The watercolour was in the collection of Casson's wife Margaret and turned into the silkscreen print that same year [1948]. After the popularity of the print, Robert McMichael hinted to Casson that he'd be happy to buy a large oil version if Casson ever decided to make a copy. Less than three weeks later, Casson drove up to McMichael's rural home with a large painting jammed into his car. 'His best-known reproduction, White Pine, was now a breathtaking major canvas'. bears inscription 'Crowfoot was the leading Chief of the Blackfeet. He was born in 1830 to the Blood tribe but had moved north to the Blackfeet when his widowed mother married a man from that tribe. according to Alan Deacon:'I am confident the Winter Sleigh Ride painting by Maud Lewis is authentic. The painting is definitely done much later than 1962 as Maud Lewis signed her paintings 'Lewis' or 'M.Lewis' until about July 1965 then she came up with the Maud.Lewis signature. Also the blue loops for shadowing are well defined in 1962/63 the blue would have just been a smudge. The work is a serial image. In other words there are similar paintings but no two paintings are alike. I believe I'm looking at a paper backing. The painting has been done on beaverboard or Masonite. The work looks to be in excellent condition.'
