'In 1886 Brymner made his first trip by train to Western Canada, where he painted the Blackfoot Nation on their reserve in Gleichen, North-West Territories [now Alberta] and scenes in the Selkirk Mountains. William Van Horne admired these works, finding them less overpowering than the scenes he had commissioned earlier from Lucius O'Brien and John A. Fraser to promote travel on his Canadian Pacific Railway. The scene is a peaceful farm set against a dramatic backdrop of mountains. The whole painting is rendered in purples and yellows, an extraordinary combination of colours for a landscape but it works, and likely because of these colours it is a picture that stays with you. Kerr has been called an habitual painter with purple. He uses it both as a neutral, preferring it to grey and brown, and as a descriptive colour. It became typical of Kerr in these later landscapes to paint in shades and tints of only two or three colours.' illustrated on page 44 in Harvest of the Spirit: Illingworth Kerr Retrospective
