Noted Emily Carr expert, Kerry Mason of Victoria wrote 'This is a rare example of the watercolour sketches which the internationally renowned Canadian artist, Emily Carr, created in the early period of her career. Although this work is undated, evidence supports the dating of this watercolour at circa 1895. Stylistically it belongs with the well known pen and ink sketches in the Emily Carr collection in the British Columbia Archives, two of which are entitled: James Bay Bridge [circa 1894-95]. and Rock Bay Bridge,1895.Several sketch books of this pre England, pre France period of Carr’s work are in both the B.C. Archives and private collections.'

'Often appearing in myth, the Tsonokwa, a complex character in the dancing societies of the southern Kwakiutl, had two forms, the most frequent a female member of a tribe of giant, shaggy, forest inhabitants. Black in colour with bushy, unkempt hair, she has a huge body and head, long pendulous breasts, and up thrust hands. Her rounded lips are pursed to utter the cry, 'Hu hu!'. She has an obsessive hunger for small children whom she tries to lure to her house where she may devour them.' according to paperwork included from the consignor, referenced from Kwakiutl Art, by Audrey Hawthorn, published by University of Washington, 1988

Reference
This horse is from the 1917 Grand Jubilee Carousel which began it's history shorty before WWI in Leavenworth Kansas. Construction of the Carousel neared completion sometime WWI at a cost of $36,000 by some prisoners of war and possibly the young Dwight D. Eisenhower (according to the consignor). On July 2, 1925 the Carousel was installed in Ocean Park, California and in 1947 the machine was brought to Beverly Park, California where it remained for almost 34 years. In 1981, a $200,000 cosmetic restoration was completed and the Grand Jubilee found a temporary home on a sound stage at Walt Disney Studios where it was filmed in Disney's $15 million dollar movie Something Wicked This Way Comes. After its career as a movie star, the Grand Jubilee travelled to the grand opeining of Calaway Park in 1982. In 1986 the Carousel was sent to New York to Guernsey Auctions where it was split up and sold.
