according to Alan Deacon:'I am confident the Winter Sleigh Ride painting by Maud Lewis is authentic. The painting is definitely done much later than 1962 as Maud Lewis signed her paintings 'Lewis' or 'M.Lewis' until about July 1965 then she came up with the Maud.Lewis signature. Also the blue loops for shadowing are well defined in 1962/63 the blue would have just been a smudge. The work is a serial image. In other words there are similar paintings but no two paintings are alike. I believe I'm looking at a paper backing. The painting has been done on beaverboard or Masonite. The work looks to be in excellent condition.'

Reference
noted Maud Lewis expert Alan Deacon writes about this painting 'I believe this painting was done in 1969 possibly 1970. Maud Lewis died July 30th ,1970. It looks to me if the green used to paint the conifers needles and branches was probably done with marker. Again it is very typical for Maud Lewis to use marker in later works. Often the marker fades with time but this green seems quite resistant to fading. So despite the strangeness of the work I do believe the painting is authentic'; we would like to thank Mr. Deacon for his help over the years; The McMichael Gallery will be having a major Maud Lewis Exhibition from June 29 to January 5, 2020.

Reference
noted Maud Lewis expert Alan Deacon writes about this painting 'This work was almost certainly painted in late 1968. Towards the end of her life her pictures are thinly painted. Here the colours are strong. Maud's signature at that time is thin and scratchy. Using a magnifier you will no doubt be able to see some of Maud's pencil outlines. As you know the work is a serial image, in other words there are similar paintings but no two works are exactly the same. The oxen series are one of the few serial images that span three decades.'; we would like to thank Mr. Deacon for his help over the years
