'Full of eagerness to explore new terrain, and maybe even earn an honest dollar or two AY had come west in company with JW Beatty.. Both artists were on a tentative commission arranged by Beatty to prepare scenic studies along the construction sites of the Canadian Northern Railway... Judging by the full-brushed, richly gleaming mountain and cloud effects of the one or two oil sketches known to remain of that 'whole raft', it is a pity that AY later 'kept throwing the sketches into the furnace until there were none left'. Only the ones already given away were saved.'; thankfully this sketch of Mountains Near Jasper was conserved and lived safely in Alberta with the family of artist John Davenall Turner until now; excerpt from A.Y.'s Canada by AY Jackson and Naomi Groves Jackson, published by Clarke, Irwin and Company Limited, 1968 pg. 148; Naomi Jackson Groves and inventory #844 inscription verso
