"Upon his return to Vancouver in late 1945, Shadbolt turned completely away from the war experience ...and began a series of romantic images. [He] again returned to observing the streets and life of Vancouver and Victoria. This year-long interlude...is one of the high points of his career. Shadbolt displays a control of the medium [watercolour], a strength of composition and an ability to create a palpable atmosphere which few can equal.
