according to the consignor: this surface-inked etching titled, Chartreuse, by New York artist, Alexander Stavenitz [1901-1960], was printed on rag paper from the original plate in 1930 in a limited edition for subscribers to The Colophon; it was printed on Rives paper [from Papier de Rives] by E. S. Gaston; this print is a bit unusual as the plate was etched but printed in relief; Stavenitz was the head of the New York committee to determine artists' eligibility under the WPA; W.P.A. was the abbreviation for the WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION, a government funded arts program that existed in the mid 1930's to the mid 1940's; Chartreuse, known as the 'Elixir of Long Life', is a Liqueur based on a 1605 manuscript given to the Carthusian fathers at their monastery in Vauvert, near Paris. In more recent times it has enjoyed some popularity in the artistic community.
