designed by Mark Villars Marshall and produced by Royal Doulton at their Lambeth Studio in 1912 for the Southam Building [built 1913] which later became known as the "Herald Building" after its most prominent tenant, the Calgary Herald newspaper; formerly on the corner of 7th Ave and 1st Street SW, the building was demolished in 1972 due to structural problems that could not be amended; lot includes booklet Masks, Monkeys & Mythical Beasts: A Benefit Auction for Calgary's Historical Preservation Fund from the event where the gargoyle was originally purchased in 1994
