Reference
illustrated and description 'The Last Load: An etching by Mr. Coburn is truly a collector's item, as the copper plates were used less than a dozen times before being discarded. This was because they were done merely as an experiment, and to prove to the satisfaction of Mr. Coburn that, if he wanted, he could turn to this medium.
Etchings, like watercolours and pastels, need not be lacking in power or anaemic in colour, and this is proven in a Coburn etching. This is the etching mentioned as having been inspired by the painting still hanging in Mr. Coburn's studio - the "Great-grand-daddy". It shows a team tired, almost dejected, after a long day in the woods. The feeling of exhaustion in the horses and the man is in accord with the early winter dusk suggested in the carefully treated sky. It has many, if not all, of the qualities of an oil painting' on page 42 in Frederick Simpson Coburn by Gerald Stevens, published by The Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1958
