Reference
according to the consignor, 'Oviloo Tunnillie titled her treatment of this subject 'Female Exploitation'. Here clearly is the male view, which may provoke the same issues of 'the male gaze' and the gender’s sexual objectification as pervades Western art. The sinuousness of her body lines is dramatically undercut by the tension in her face, both from her grimace and the veins in the stone, which suggests the carver’s empathetic not demeaning perspective. The Inuit culture’s openness saves this work from prurience and sexism.'

Provenance
The Yacowar-Petrie collection, 50 years in the making, comes from two longtime Calgarians now retired in Victoria, B.C. Anne Petrie was the award-winning CBC TV journalist [Petrie on Prime, etc.] and author [Gone to an Aunt’s]. English/Film Studies Professor Maurice Yacowar had a double stint at the University of Calgary, as the founding [and the first fired] editor of the student paper, The Gauntlet, then as Dean of Fine Arts.
