Biographical Information
Chris Millar ~ [b.1977] Canadian
Chris Millar was born in Claresholm, Alberta, and currently lives and works in Delson, Québec. He completed a Fine Arts Diploma in 1998 at Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton, Alberta and his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Alberta College of Art and Design (now the Alberta University of the Arts) in Calgary in 2000.

Millar creates intricately constructed paintings and sculptures that combine meticulous craftsmanship with an exuberant sense of humour and absurdity. Drawing from comic books, rock music, video games, television, the art world, and popular culture, his work builds dense fictional worlds populated by strange characters, elaborate objects, and overlapping narratives. Humour, parody, and excess become tools for reflecting on human behaviour and the accelerated visual culture of contemporary life.

Working across painting, sculpture, electronics, and mixed media, Millar is known for an intensive approach to making. His artworks develop through accumulations of numerous processes and layers. The resulting works reward close looking, revealing details, jokes, and visual detours that can be easily missed at first glance.

Millar’s work has received significant recognition, including the 2012 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award and runner-up honours in the 2007 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. His work figures in many private and public institutions across Canada, including: the National Gallery of Canada, Glenbow Museum, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Royal Bank of Canada, and the Claridge Collection. Millar has exhibited extensively throughout Canada, with his work presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He is represented by Trépanier Baer Gallery in Calgary.
