Biographical Information
Phillip Kamikpakittuq ~ [b. 1955] Inuit
Phillip Kamikpakittuq was bom in Back River in 1955 and spent his early years in Baker Lake. His grandfather (Luke Anguhadluq) suggested he start carving to ear his own spending money when he was 13 years old. He sold his first piece the next moming to the Co-op and has been in demánd ever since. His mother Olive Mank Innakatsik is a carving artists as well as three uncles who helped him a bit in his early years. At age 17, Phillip moved to Gjoe Haven but didn't get too serious about carving for about three years. Phillip has developed a st that shares the best of both communities. Phillips exhibitions have included the Masters of the Arctic, (1989 New York) presented by the Anway Corporation to the United Nations General Assembly and Transitions (1997, Paris) presented by Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. Other exhibitions include the Inuit Gallery of Eskimo Art, Toronto (1990), The Guild Shop, Toronto (1990-1991), Inuit Callery of Vancouver (1991), and Alber's Gallery San Francisco (1993). He has attended and been featured at the Great Northen Arts Festival and has pieces in many private collections as well.
