Biographical Information
Aron Hill ~ [b.1977] Canadian
Aron Hill was born in 1977 in Calgary, Alberta. In 2000, Hill earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts) and completed an MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2006. His work evolved into installation based projects using traditional drawing and painting methods alongside formal sculptural elements, large format photography and text based work.
Hill as an artist, an educator, and a writer added being a foster parent to their biography when their family fostered a baby girl. This life-changing event has become woven into Hill’s creative practice through themes of domestic life, labour, care, community and critical analysis of historical colonialism to create compelling visual narratives. Using bright, flat colour on prepared raw canvas, Hill creates crisp, enigmatic compositions that suggest celestial forms, rocks, flowers, vessels and imagined terrain. Although highly distilled, his paintings remain connected to the visible world and often begin from a figurative point of view.
Hill lives and works in Calgary and has exhibited across Canada and internationally. Their work is held in private and corporate collections, including RBC, Suncor, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and Alberta University of the Arts.
