Biographical Information
Robert [Bob] Chelmick ~ [b.1949] Canadian ASA
Robert Chelmick on the Flying Colours collection of Cibachrome images:

What I see in the tiny wing patterns is, if you will, nothing short of the infinite Intelligence of the universe. By proceeding to get closer and closer to the nature of Nature, there was revealed to the mind’s eye an ever-more obvious expression of an immeasurable orderliness, precision, and purposefulness - even as the subject matter became more and more abstracted by the perspective. The ineffable revealed deep within the concreteness of the material world was a revelation. One that seemed to carry me through the many hundreds of hours of work in isolation.

My intension with this body of work was to share how this abstract orderliness was mind-expanding. The exploration was an exercise in isolating powerfully arresting vantage points that could be shared in photographic prints. And through that journey, to share the wonder felt in making the images - from camera to darkroom, to an internationally travelled exhibition.

Sure, the subject matter is butterflies, moths and beetles, but that was merely the starting point. Transcending the bugness toward something far beyond was - and hopefully is - the experience of those who encounter these works.

Robert Chelmick is a host/writer/broadcaster, visual artist, photographer, video producer/director and creative project producer; his work is represented in collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Royal Alberta Museum, Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Algoma, Laidlaw Gallery, Alberta College, University of Alberta, MacEwan University and other institutions and corporations; see artist's website at w ww.chelmick.com; listed on Artists in Canada, a Union List of Artists' Files, by National Gallery of Canada Library et al, Canadian Heritage Information Network [CHIN] website at Artists in Canada
