Biographical Information
Ernest [Ernie] Raymond ~ [20th Century] Inuit
Ernie Raymond was born in Inuvik and raised in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. His early inspirations in the art world were generated by his grandfather, Phillip Raymond who was a well known Tuktoyaktuk artist. Ernie has been featured at the Great Northern Arts Festival, on ‘Trading Spaces’, a Canadian television show and has other shows in Northern Galleries. Ernie spent a great deal of time carving with Bill and Eli Nasogaluak and Ronnie Taylor. He recognizes that they helped him develop his style. Ernie is best known for his Dancing Cranes out of Musk Ox Horn but carves many other themes from soapstone as well. He enjoys hunting, fishing and travelling on the land – especially in the Spring.
