Biographical Information
Blake [Nagasuk] Noksana ~ [b. 1967] Inuit
Blake [Nagasuk] Noksana was born in 1967 in Tuktoyaktuk, NT and is now living in Yellowknife with his wife and daughter. Blake has been carving seriously since 2002 alongside fellow carvers all hailing from Tuktoyaktuk. His influences from his culture and stories told to him, as a child, by his grandparents, is evident in his carvings today. He also credits his influences from his colleagues. Although carving seriously only for the past few years, Blake's work shows sophistication and craftsmanship beyond his short but successful art career thus far. He credits this largely to his approach about studying and learning the "Art" of carving by trying to improve his work on a "piece by piece" process. Additionally, he enjoys the process of creating a piece not for financial rewards but for the satisfaction it gives him. This he says can be accredited also to the fact Blake only carves part-time without the financial pressures of the art world. He is a certified Heavy Duty Mechanic currently working in this trade today.
