Artists in Canada; Ian Cook received his BFA (Sculpture) and B.Ed (Art) from the U of C and MVA (Sculpture) from the U of A. He teaches courses in Sculpture, Drawing, and Visual Fundamentals.
The conceptual framework for Ian Cook’s sculptures is humanity’s relationship to the earth. Within a landscape context, his sculpture work includes a symbolic human presence in the form of architectural and engineered structures tied to the landscape.
His sculptures describe the transformative forces of nature at work including the erosive powers of heat, wind, and water. In his sculptures these erosive forces become change agents in the reorganization and restructuring of landscape as well as the human-made structures connected to the landscape. Newton’s thermodynamic ‘arrow of time,’ which defines the one-way direction of increasing entropy, is an important factor in explaining the message embedded within his sculptures.
Exhibited national and internationally, Ian’s work is represented in public collections including the Canada Art Bank, the AFA Art Collection, Alberta Public Works, U of A Art Collection, RDP Permanent Art Collection, Corporation Collection and private collections.
