Biographical Information
Paul Van Ginkel ~ [b.1960] Canadian
Paul Van Ginkel was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1960. and moved to Calgary in 1973. He studied at the Alberta College of Art (now Alberta University of the Arts) from 1979 to 1983 before earning a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University. Following six years in editorial and commercial illustration, he has worked as a full-time fine art painter since 1990.

Van Ginkel is known for his dynamic figurative works with depictions of Western culture, equine subjects, and people encountered throughout his life and travels. He attributes much of his growth as an artist to extended trips to major art centres including Italy, New York, Santa Fe, Mexico and Australia. His paintings frequently emerge from sustained engagement with particular subjects, cultural traditions, and individuals he meets.

Based in Calgary, Van Ginkel has maintained a longstanding connection to Western Canadian communities and subjects. Notable commissions include two large paintings in 2022 from Siksika Chief Ouray Crowfoot to commemorate the signing of the 1910 Land Reclamation Agreement with the Federal Government and in 2006 being the first ‘fine artist’ selected to paint the annual Calgary Stampede poster.

Across his practice, Van Ginkel approaches portraiture and figurative painting as a means of documenting people, experiences, and cultural histories. He allows the character, context, and expression of each subject to guide the visual language of the resulting work.
