Biographical Information
Adrian Stimson ~ [20/21st century] Indigenous/Canadian
Adrian Stimson is a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in southern Alberta. He is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and educator who graduated with distinction in 2003 with a BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts before earning his MFA from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006. In March 2024, AUArts appointed Stimson as the university’s chair of the board of governors, the first Indigenous board chair in the institution’s 98-year history. He considers himself as an interdisciplinary artist, exhibiting nationally and internationally.
Adrian’s work includes paintings, installations, wet plate photography, public art sculptures, and performance. He is a regular participant at Burning Man and his performance art looks at identity construction, specifically the hybridization of the Indian, the cowboy, the shaman and Two Spirit being where Buffalo Boy and The Shaman Exterminator are two recurring personas. His prints and paintings are varied, yet his black and white monochromatic paintings depicting bison in imagined landscapes are well known; they are melancholic and memorializing, evoking ideas of cultural fragility, resilience and nostalgia. The British Museum recently acquired two paintings for their North American Indigenous collection.
Adrian was a participant in the Canadian Forces Artist Program, which sent him to Afghanistan in 2010. He was awarded the Governor General award in Visual Arts in 2018, the REVEAL Indigenous Arts Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation in 2017, the Blackfoot Visual Arts Award in 2009, the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003.
