see McMichael Canadian Collection, pg.178 for two similar paintings 'The Pool, 1918' and 'Sunlit Hill, 1919' in the collection of the McMichael Canadian Collection. The artist travelled with Dr. MacCallum, J.E.H. MacDonald and F. Johnston by C.P.R. to Sault Ste. Marie in September of 1918. They had a special caboose to go from siding to siding and started in Caboose, north of Sault Ste. Marie. They then went on to Montreal River and finally to Batchewana. They arrived back in Toronto in October. An exhibition was held at the Art Gallery of Toronto in April, 1919. The Group of Seven, by D.Reid, pg132, N.G.C., 1970. In 1919 a second trip to Algoma was planned with A.Y. Jackson replacing Dr. MacCallum. They took the same route and returned mid-October Reid, pg.136.
