'[Joe Norris] is the champion of seagulls in the folk art realm. As a fisherman, he was used to the daily presence of gulls on the sea and on the land. From his earliest works to [his final] paintings, seagulls occupied a prominent place in Norris's work, as his signature piece... While many of Joe's seagull works evoke a carefree, humorous mood, they nonetheless show his imaginative interpretation of his physical environment and the bird kingdom... The penguin paintings, which seem so out of place amid his down-home Atlantic subjects, grew out of his affection for exotic creatures that he had seen on television.' - from Joe Norris: Painted Visions of Nova Scotia by Bernard Riordon, published by Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 2000)
