Reference
from The Canadian Encyclopedia: 'Arrowhead sashes are an essential component of traditional French Canadian clothing. Research suggests that the sashes were first worn by French Canadians in the 1770s and that they fashioned them to tie winter coats to stay warm. The sash also prevented injuries for manual labourers and voyagers as they acted as ergonomic back belts. They were a valued status symbol as French Canadians wore highly decorated, labour-intensive and expensive sashes.'
